Is your small bundle of joy giving you nightmares when it comes to sleeping? Are you having troubles in making your newborn baby to sleep either during the day or at night? Well, you are not alone, the majority of parents out there are also facing the same problem as you. Babies can stress you out by their sleeping patterns, they sleep when not needed and won’t fall asleep when you need them. After thorough research, I have compiled some tips that are helpful when it comes to making your baby sleep when you want. Read through and make your newborn baby to sleep easily.
Use Your Baby’s Room Light Strategically
Child wellness experts have found that it’s possible to use your child’s room lighting strategically when it comes to making your newborn baby to sleep. Wondering how? Well, lights set your baby to be active or their ‘go’ button is switched on by lights. On the other hand, darkness activates your child’s brain to release melatonin, a sleep-inducing hormone. In this regard, you should use the light strategically to help your little bundle of joy to figure out the right sleeping times.
During the day, ensure that lots of sunlight get into your child’s room or places you spend most of the time with your baby. You can also take him or her outside for the maximum amount of light. When it comes to napping time, ensure the room or place is well lit to avoid lots of sleeping during the day.
To provoke nighttime sleepiness, you might want to install dimmers on the lights fitted in your small munchkin’s room as well as other rooms that you spend more time together. Make sure the lights are lowered at night about two hours to bedtime to bring about the sleeping mood. You can also consider using a baby night light in your baby’s room to lessen the light. However, ensure you don’t plug it close to your baby’s crib.
If your child happens to wake up at night, avoid turning on the lights or even taking him or her to a heavily lit room. Moving him from dark to light triggers his or her brain to ‘go’ time. You should gently soothe him back to sleep while still in his or her darkroom. If your baby wakes up very early in the morning, you should check whether early sunlight is the cause and perhaps invest in room darkening shades for babies. The shades can also be helpful if your baby has difficulties sleeping in the afternoon.
Avoid rushing to your baby after every squeak
If you keep on rushing to your baby after every squeak heard from your baby monitor, you will only be training your little munchkin to wake up more often. You should always give your baby a few minutes to fall back to sleep without your intervention. If he or she doesn’t, and your baby monitor shows she is waking up, that’s when you should intervene. In addition, it’s important that you keep your monitor sensitivity down. Keep the volume down so that you are not alerted after every gurgle.
Avoid eye contact when making your baby to sleep
Small babies easily get stimulated by small actions. Just engaging your baby to gaze at you is enough to get his or her attention and signify that its playtime. You should, thus, avoid making eye contact with your sleepy baby as this will make your baby snap out of his or her sleep zone. In addition, avoid lots of interactions with your baby at night or when you are trying to make him or her to sleep. Rather than playing with your baby when you take him or her to their crib or bassinet, you can soothe him or her to sleep with her favorite song, quiet voice or even a gentle touch while avoiding a direct gaze.
Avoid changing the diaper every time your baby wakes up
There is always the urge to always change your baby’s diaper every time he or she wakes up, you should relax this rule, he or she doesn’t always require it. Doing this always jostles your little angel to wake up. You should consider using a high-quality nighttime diaper before taking your baby to sleep. In case he or she wakes up, you should sniff the diaper to determine if it’s soiled and only change it if your baby has pooped. Changing the diaper when your baby wakes up only makes him or her be fully awake and it would be a difficult task to put him or her back to sleep. If you need to change the diaper, always use wipes that you have warmed using a wipe warmer.
A Dream Feed Works Wonders
If your baby is the type that sleeps for only a few minutes and wakes up at late nights, a dream feed may be helpful in ensuring that he or she sleeps for a longer period. As your baby’s room lights remain dim, gently lift your sleepy munchkin from his crib, ensure he is well settled to take a bottle or for nursing. Your baby may be woke just enough to feed. However, if he or she is not awake, gently nudge his or her lips with the nipple until it is well latched for suckling. After you are through with the dream feeding, gently put your baby back to bed and don’t let him or her burp.
Take your baby to the crib when about to sleep but not asleep
Give your baby a chance to fall asleep on their own. Although this might be difficult in the first days, by the time your baby is about 4 weeks he or she is ready to fall asleep by their own without your intervention. Always ensure that you put your small munchkin to his or her crib while still awake or drowsy and let him or her fall asleep alone while there.
You should avoid rocking or nursing your baby to sleep irrespective of their young age. This will have an effect on your baby’s sleeping habit and if you rock your baby every time you want him or her to sleep expect to do the same every night as he or she won’t sleep without it.
You should know that it’s not normal or natural to nurse or rock a baby to sleep and just because your baby enjoys it, shouldn’t be a common occurrence. Allow your baby to fall asleep by his or her own for better sleeping habit.
Have a bedtime routine
Just because your baby is just days or weeks old shouldn’t be a reason enough to have a bedtime routine. This can be done through simple aspects like changing your baby for bed, giving him or her a goodnight kiss or singing a lullaby.
Getting your newborn baby to sleep is no doubt a daunting task. However, following the above tips will help you establish a healthy sleeping habit for your baby.
