Changing the diaper when your baby wakes up only makes him or her to be fully awake and it would be a difficult task to put him or her back to sleep. If you need to change the diaper, always use wipes that you have warmed using a wipe warmer.
A dream feed works wonders
If your baby is the type that sleeps for only a few minutes and wakes up at late nights, a dream feed may be helpful in ensuring that he or she sleeps for a longer period. As your baby’s room lights remain dim, gently lift your sleepy munchkin from his crib, ensure he is well settled to take a bottle or for nursing. Your baby maybe woke just enough to feed. However, if he or she is not awake, gently nudge his or her lips with the nipple till it is well latched for suckling. After you are through with the dream feeding, gently put your baby back to bed and don’t let him or her to burp.
Take your baby to the crib when about to sleep but not asleep
Give your baby a chance to fall asleep by their own. Although this might be difficult in the first days, by the time your baby is about 4 weeks he or she is ready to fall asleep by their own without your intervention. Always ensure that you put your small munchkin to his or her crib while still awake or drowsy and let him or her fall asleep alone while there.
You should avoid rocking or nursing your baby to sleep irrespective of their young age. This will have an effect on your baby’s sleeping habit and if you rock your baby every time you want him or her to sleep expect to do the same every night as he or she won’t sleep without it.
You should know that it’s not normal or natural to nurse or rock a baby to sleep and just because your baby enjoys it, shouldn’t be a common occurrence. Allow your baby to fall asleep by his or her own for better sleeping habit.
Have a bedtime routine
Just because your baby is just days or weeks old shouldn’t be a reason enough to have a bedtime routine. This can be done through simple aspects like changing your baby for bed, giving him or her a goodnight kiss or singing a lullaby.
